The Passionists -

St. Paul of the Cross Province

Pre-Novitiate

If you’re accepted by the Passionists of St. Paul of the Cross province to become a member, you begin an initial stage of formation called the Pre-Novitiate, sharing life in a community, participating in daily mass and morning and evening prayer. You will also study and take part in some ministry under the guidance of a spiritual director.

After two years, your formation experience continues during a year of novitiate.

Novitiate

In the Passionist novitiate,  you focus on the Passionist charism by studying the Passionist rule of life and the vows of celibacy, poverty and obedience, which are the foundation of the religious life. You are clothed in the black Passionist habit at the beginning of the novitiate and when you take vows at the end of the year, you receive the Passionist sign, which represents the fourth vow we take: To remember the sufferings and death of Jesus Christ.

Theological Studies: CTU, Chicago

Then, you continue study and formation at The Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, Illinois. In this school of ministry, along with others from all over the world, you pursue academic studies  while participating in community daily mass and prayer. Each summer you return to your own province for some ministry.

Before the fourth year–your last year at CTU–you take your final or perpetual vows. Candidates for the priesthood are ordained to the priesthood in their final year; brother candidates are graduated.  After graduation and/or ordination, you are assigned to a Passionist community and ministry.

And that’s only a beginning. A dream goes on, and it will lead you on a exciting journey all your life.
