The Community of the Immaculate Conception Monastery, Jamaica, New York, recently celebrated with great joy the 60th Anniversary of the Ordination of two of its members, Fr. Lawrence Bellew, C.P. and Fr. Quentin Amrhein, C.P. They are the surviving members of the ordination class of February 27, 1953.
Over the course of the years, Fr. Larry has been a member of the Passionist Preaching Band, a Parish Priest, served in administration, was a Retreat Director and for 30 years administered to the sick and suffering as a Hospital Chaplain.
Reflecting on his many years as a Passionist priest Fr. Larry commented, “My many years as a Passionist priest were a real joy and certainly didn’t seem like 60 years.”
Fr. Quentin, during his 60 years as a Passionist priest, was a member of the Passionist Preaching Band, a Parish Priest, a Hospital Chaplain and a Retreat Master for the Passionist Nuns in Pittsburgh, Pa. For some years, due to ill health, he shared in a special way in the Passion of Jesus.
Looking back over the course of 60 years as a Passionist priest Fr. Quentin reflected, “Some of the years sped by, others were painfully slow as when I almost died twice. It is a great honor to be a Passionist priest and aware of my unworthiness, over the years I relied greatly on prayer.”
Their sixty years of faithful service as Passionist priests have been a generous gift to the Church. We ask the Lord to bless them abundantly just as they have blessed so many in their priestly ministry.
With our Jubilarians in mind we recall St. Paul’s words in his letter to the Corinthians, “I give thanks to my God always on your account for the grace of God bestowed on you in Christ Jesus, that in him you were enriched in every way, with all discourse and all knowledge, as the testimony to Christ was confirmed among you, so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.
He will keep you firm to the end, irreproachable on the day of our Lord Jesus [Christ].
God is faithful, and by him you were called to fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” 1 Corinthians: 4-9
