Dr. Adele de Vera and her daughter Tia, friends of our Provincial Fr. Robert Joerger, recently spent two weeks volunteering in Mandeville, Jamaica. She says,
Tia and I were in Mandeville, Jamaica these last 2 weeks. I want to thank you because you were the one who gave me Bishop Neil’s info several years ago. I saw almost 300 children/teens in 8 days and did a lot of physical exams. These were mainly checkups they needed for school entry. I had 2 nurses with me, and Tia. On the last 3 days, 3 PVI’s (Passionist Volunteers International) helped me.
Tia did such a wonderful job. I am so proud of her. The first day she was so overwhelmed she literally just sat in a corner and did not move. She was supposed to give out stickers to the children and she couldn’t even do that. The next day, I gave her a job. She was in charge of signing in, registering, and getting basic information from the patients. She really stepped up to the plate and there was no holding her back! One day we saw 50 patients, the next day we say 60. It was hard to understand a lot of the adults because they spoke a mixture of patois and English, but she got the information we needed.
