Mi 2:1-5
Mt 12:14-21
As the tension between Jesus and the Pharisees builds, Matthew’s gospel today quotes from Isaiah. The position of this passage as we move towrads Jesus death and resurrection serves to illustrate something about Jesus’ mission.
The passage from Isaiah describes God’s servant, in whom the Lord delights, and states that his purpose is to bring justice. Further more, it emphasizes that “he will not contend or cry out” or break a reed: Jesus’ mission is not a mission of conquest, but one of self sacrifice, the fruits of which are to bring hope.
