Angels of Light – A Day Camp Program for the Children of Haiti’s Tent Cities

In the days immediately following the earthquake, Fr. Rick’s organization began a day camp program for children left orphaned, vulnerable and displaced in the tent cities of Port-au-Prince. This program each day, provides children fun activities in a safe environment, two nutritious meals and help to heal their emotional wounds.

The Angels of Light program has 4 main objectives:

  1. Provide permanent care for children orphaned by the earthquake of January 12 by integrating them into the NPH home and providing extra care for those with mental and physical problems as a result of the earthquake.
  2. Identify children left homeless or otherwise unable to care for themselves, but who still have families and therefore are not being integrated into the NPH/NPFS Family. Our goal is to provide temporary care for these children until they are reunited with their families.
  3. Invite severely disabled children who are victims of the earthquake to join our family either permanently or provisionally until they are able to function on their own and rejoin their family through our assistance in providing prosthesis or other aids to continue with their lives.
  4. To refer to other more suitable organizations those children for whom we are unable to provide appropriate care, such as previous street children or inmates of the juvenile prison. Provide assistance to those older children with families who are in need, but are better situated to remain in their neighborhoods.

The program needs additional funds so that more children can participate. Can you help?

An Update from Fr. Rick Frechette in Haiti: Rebuilding Three Months On

Fr. Rick Frechette and his staff are working hard at rebuilding and restoring vital programs that were lost in the devastating earthquake in January.

New premises have been rented to temporarily replace the old Fr. Wasson Center in Pétionville which collapsed in the quake. These new premises will house social work and sponsorship programs, office staff, volunteers and guests until a new center is completed. The only program left to restore is the one for disabled children from the Pétionville area. The strength of this program is that it is community based, so it is important to replace it in that neighborhood.

It is important to note that no building contructed by Fr. Rick and his organization, including St. Damien’s Hospital and several schools, collapsed during the quake. Everything was done the right way. The buildings that did collapse were older structures purchased from others.

Land has been purchased and plans are underway for a new Fr. Wasson Center that will be connected to St. Damien’s. This center will provide programs and support for children and youth of all ages.

Fr. Rick and his organization are continuing to distribute tons of food, tents and tarps.

Help is needed for all of these endeavors.
