'Begin in Freedom'
St. Callistus I
You impose on people burdens hard to carry, but you yourselves do not lift one finger to touch them.
- Luke 11:46
There is no more powerful force for evangelization than a faithful disciple laying down his or her life for others. Likewise, there is nothing more toxic to the gospel than hypocrisy. This is why Jesus had such harsh words for those who should have known better--religious authorities. Instead, they made a living by harping on the most minute details of the Law and failed to show love to God and neighbor. Their exercise of authority undermined faith in God; they put legalisms above the person.
St. Paul directs us instead to live a life that is animated by the Holy Spirit, a life in which Christians bear good fruit, evidenced by kindness, patience, joy and generosity. These elevate the human spirit and the human condition rather than having us languish in selfishness, slaves to our own desires. May we begin each day in freedom, earnestly seeking to follow the Spirit of God more closely!
