Jesus sums up his mission in the world by saying, ‘I have glorified you on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do….I have made your name known.’
By enduring his suffering and death on the cross Jesus could honestly say, ‘it is finished’. Through his teachings and by his care and presence to the poor and oppressed men and women of his time Jesus ‘made known the love, compassion and mercy of his Father. Jesus said to Philip, ’he who sees me sees the Father,’
and by being raised from the death by the Father the Father accepts and approves the awesome ‘work’ of his son.
St. Paul tells us that Jesus is the love of God made visible. We see in the crucified Christ the Father’s great love for each one of us made known. To deny, ignore or reject such a love is a great tragedy. To accept and open our lives to such a love is a grace for which we all should pray.
