“Who do people say the Son of Man is?” When Jesus asked the disciples this question, they answered John the Baptizer, Elijah, Jeremiah or another prophet. They were responding in terms of what they knew about Jesus and his works. Then Jesus asked, “Who do you say that I am?”
Simon Peter answered, “the Son of the living God!” Jesus rewarded Peter for his acclamation of faith, declaring it to be the “Rock” upon which his church on earth is to be built. He entrusts to Peter the keys to open the doors to the kingdom of heaven.
Jesus says to each of us, “Who do you say that I am?” Do we really know Jesus or do we just know a lot about him? Do we take time to speak to him each day and more importantly, to listen? Jesus wants very much to have that quiet, intimate conversation with each of us. In the busyness of our daily lives, we must find time to listen.
In the next verses of this chapter Matthew’s gospel, Jesus begins to describe how we get to know him better. His Passion is looming and he tell us, as his followers that we must walk the road to Calvary with him. We must find him in every person we meet on the way. We must even find him in that person in the mirror. This is no easy task.
Jesus is asking us to affirm our faith in him as Peter did, so he can continue to use us as the living stones of his church on earth. May we ever keep the Passion of Jesus alive in our hearts.
